Our Authors on the Canada Reads List

We have updated our Privacy Policy, effective May 25, 2018, to clarify how we collect and process your personal data. By continuing to use this website, you acknowledge that you have read and agree to the updated Privacy Policy.

We are excited to share the news that Penguin Random House Canada is home to THREE of the five books in contention for this year’s CANADA READS! This year’s theme for Canada Reads is One Book To Open Your Eyes, featuring books that challenge readers to look differently at themselves, their neighbours and the world around them. This is a fantastic promotional opportunity for our books, as they will be featured on CBC platforms throughout the next two months, and will then be championed and discussed in a week-long series on-air radio debates which run March 26-29th.

Our authors are:

SHARON BALA for THE BOAT PEOPLE, published by McClelland & Stewart and edited by Anita Chong; also available as an audiobook narrated by Athena Karkanis.
THE BOAT PEOPLE will be championed on CBC by Mozhdah Jamalzadah, who has been called the “Oprah of Afghanistan”.

OMAR EL AKKAD for AMERICAN WAR, published by McClelland & Stewart and edited by Jared Bland; also available as an audiobook from Random House Audio.
AMERICAN WAR will be defended by Tahmoh Penikett, son of former Yukon premier Tony Penikett and Lulla Sierra Johns of the White River First Nation, who is best known as an actor for his role playing Karl “Helo” Agathon on the TV series Battlestar Galactica

CRAIG DAVIDSON for PRECIOUS CARGO, published by Knopf Canada and edited by Lynn Henry.
PRECIOUS CARGO will be defended by Greg Johnson, a professional storm chaser and extreme weather expert

For your information, the two other contenders are:
FORGIVENESS by Mark Sakamoto, being defended by Jeanne Beker
THE MARROW THIEVES by Cherie Dimaline, being defended by Jully Black

Congratulations also to our longlisted titles for this year’s Canada Reads:
- DAVID CHARIANDY for BROTHER, published by McClelland & Stewart and edited by Martha Kanya-Forstner; also available as an audiobook read by Joseph Pierre
