New Salman Rushdie Novel
Toronto. January 29, 2015: Knopf Canada, an imprint of Penguin Random House Canada has acquired a new novel by Salman Rushdie. Two Years Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights is a wonder tale about the way we live now, a rich and multifaceted work that blends history, mythology, and a timeless love story to bring alive a world - our world – that has been plunged into an age of unreason. Inspired by 2,000 years of storytelling tradition yet rooted in the concerns of our present moment, it is a breathtaking achievement and an enduring testament to the power of the imagination.
Salman Rushdie is the author of eleven previous novels, including Midnight’s Children (awarded the Booker Prize in 1981, and the Best of the Booker Prize in 2008), Shame, The Satanic Verses, The Moor’s Last Sigh, The Ground Beneath Her Feet, Fury, Shalimar the Clown and The Enchantress of Florence, as well as a book of stories, East, West, and three works of non-fiction. His memoir, Joseph Anton, was published in 2012 and became an internationally acclaimed bestseller. It was called “Wonderful: as much a meditation on life, liberty and the pursuit of truth as an engrossing memoir” (Maclean’s); “A monument so impressive it threatens to overshadow all the fictions on which his considerable reputation currently rests” (The Globe and Mail); “a harrowing, deeply felt and revealing document” (The New York Times); and praised as “the finest new memoir to cross my desk in many a year” (The Washington Post). His books have been translated into over forty languages.
Louise Dennys, Executive Publisher, Random House of Canada, acquired Canadian rights from Andrew Wylie at The Wylie Agency. She said, “A truly great, deeply rewarding story is hard to come by and we cherish such stories. Salman Rushdie is our preeminent storyteller, but he has outdone even himself in his spellbinding new novel –his most entertaining, most moving and, given the novel’s powerful moral vision, his most deceptively lighthearted… It is absolutely gripping. The characters we meet here, with their dreams of love, their hopes and ambitions for themselves and the world, their battles for survival and for power, will live in our imaginations for years. The novel is sometimes such fun you will laugh aloud, but you will also be moved to tears. I loved every moment of this fabulous story.”
Two Years Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights will be published simultaneously around the world in the English language in September 2015.
