INTERNATIONAL NUMBER ONE BESTSELLING CRIME WRITER LINWOOD BARCLAY PENS CHILDREN’S MYSTERY-ADVENTURE INSPIRED BY HIS CHILDHOOD

TORONTO, ONTARIO (Monday June 27, 2016) – Penguin Random House Canada has signed a two book deal for bestselling Canadian crime-fiction writer Linwood Barclay’s children’s books.  Chase, Barclay’s first children’s novel, will be published simultaneously with Orion UK in July 2017.

Tara Walker, Publisher, Penguin Random House Canada Young Readers, says: “We are very excited to be publishing two new books by Linwood Barclay. PRH Canada has been the proud Canadian home of Linwood’s bestselling crime novels, and we are thrilled that he will remain in the family. His novels have kept adult readers enthralled for many years, and now we look forward to introducing Linwood to a new, younger audience.”

Chase, which is aimed at the middle-grade market, centres on Chipper, a special dog who is part of a multi-million dollar experiment at a secret organization known only as The Institute. Chipper, once a regular dog, has been melded with state-of-the-art computer technology in order to carry out secret missions. Barclay’s trademark page-turning action is interjected with humour when Chipper’s natural dog instincts take over in the middle of missions. If he sees a squirrel or a mouse, he’ll drop everything to chase it and it’s not long before the folks at The Institute decide it’s time to pull the plug on Chipper.

Linwood Barclay, says Chipper is based on his childhood dog, commenting, “Chipper was my dog from about 1966 until I left home in 1977. He was a stray that wandered into the cottage resort and trailer park my parents ran at the time. Much of my boy hero’s experience at the cabin resort that features in Chase is based on my teen years.  So I wanted to name my hero pup Chipper, and it may seem obvious to everyone - it certainly was to my wife, who first pointed it out - that Chipper is the ideal name for a dog that is loaded with computer chips.”

It was Barclay’s wife, Neetha, a lifelong teacher, who urged him to write about Chipper. Barclay continues, “Neetha’s wanted me to write this book ever since I first got the idea. She’s always been an advocate for getting kids to read, and while she thinks girls will love this story, she thinks it will appeal particularly to young boys, who often find it difficult to get into reading.”

Commenting on the book, Lynne Missen, Publishing Director at Penguin Random House Canada Young Readers, says: “Chase is such an exciting novel – perfect for the middle-grade audience. The multiple viewpoints (including Chipper, the dog’s), the short chapters, and the gripping storyline – not to mention cliffhanger ending – will have readers glued to their seats, then clamouring for more!”
