Flannery O’Connor was born in Savannah, Georgia, on March 25, 1925, and was raised on the family dairy farm in Milledgeville. After graduation from the Georgia College and State University, she attended the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and received an MFA in 1947. Among the strongest influences on O’Connor’s work were Faulkner, Poe, Joyce, and Dostoevsky. Following the publication of several short stories, O’Connor’s first novel, Wise Blood, was published in 1952. Suffering from a hereditary rheumatic ailment, she spent the next twelve years living with her vigilant mother, Regina, at the family farm in Milledgeville writing, raising peacocks, and entertaining a steady stream of visitors.
