Poultry Bondage, The Nature of Fun

Though this is not exactly the best way to truss a chicken, it’s also the only Fifty Shades of Grey parody to ever actually tickle my funny bone.

Here’s an excerpt on the nature of fun, from a writerly perspective, from David Foster Wallace’s newly released book of previously uncollected essays, Both Flesh and Not Flesh. In his review of the book, Michael Robbins writes, “without contributing to the hagiography of David Foster Wallace, we can affirm that he left the essay form in a different state than it was in before he wrote.” Sounds about right to me.

Remember when we asked a bunch of really talented and very diverse writers if they thought it was fair to compare literature to a game? Well, Tim Parks says it’s a game alright, and that just maybe we need to worry less about those Swedish refs.
