About the Role: 

Appetitethe award-winning Vancouver-based food and lifestyle imprint of Penguin Random House Canadais seeking a Publishing Assistant to support the Publisher and editorial team of this busy imprint. This is an exceptional opportunity for the right candidate looking to further their career in book publishing. 

We are looking for a proactive, energetic individual who will to take on a wide variety of tasks with confidence and enthusiasm. The ability to understand and anticipate the needs of our team and work confidently to support them is of paramount importance. This role will make a significant contribution to the day-to-day running of our office in Vancouver, as well as maintaining excellent long-distance relationships with our colleagues in Toronto. To work at Appetite an interest in food and lifestyle publishing is absolutely essential, as well as a genuine passion and curiosity for what we do, and creative thinking for how we can do it better.

Your Experience: 

The successful candidate will have the ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities at the same time, while keeping themselves and others on track. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills are required for this role, as are stellar information management skills, a flair for copywriting, and confidence and proficiency with copyediting and proofreading. The duties of this role include: a range of administrative tasks associated with the acquisition of titles (e.g. drafting offer letters, compiling and inputting contract paperwork); preparing sales and marketing materials for those titles (e.g. writing and copyediting TI copy, creating presentations, proofreading materials); reading and evaluating proposals on submission; assisting the editorial team with manuscripts and photography as the books progress through the editorial process (e.g. coordinating photography uploads, copyediting materials, proofreading pages); supporting the team with preparation and attendance at author events; meeting the overall organizational and administrative needs of the Publisher and the imprint (e.g. managing the Publisher’s calendar, ordering stationery and supplies; compiling expense reports, serving as the IT go-to for the team).

The ideal candidate will have experience and/or education in copyediting and proofreading. Previous administrative/assistant experience is highly recommended, as is a solid understanding of the publishing process. Excellent IT savvy is a must, including proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office for both Mac and PC (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point).
